Cognitive Processing Therapy

Meet the Staff

Program Overview:

Experiencing traumatic events can change the way we think. They can lead to unhelpful cognitions and beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. This can result in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, leading to symptoms such as sleep disturbance, intrusive thoughts or memories, experiencing a heightened startle response, and other symptoms that interfere with our functioning. Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)  provides a structured approach to examining these unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, and gives you the tools to help “change the narrative.” Throughout this therapy, you and your therapist will work closely to monitor your symptoms, and to work through the thoughts and beliefs that have kept you “stuck.”  The resulting experience is cognitive flexibility and healing.

Program Description:

Following the manual set by Dr. Patricia Resick, Dr. Candice Monson, and Dr. Kathleen Chard, our CPT program consists of one pre-treatment assessment session and roughly 12 - 24 structured therapy sessions.  The exact number of sessions is based on each individual’s experience and progression with the treatment.  In conjunction with the weekly therapeutic meetings,  assignments to be completed outside of sessions assist in reinforcing new skill sets and providing insights.  These assignments are an essential part of the healing process and are reviewed in the following session.

What to Expect in pre-assessment:

During your pre-assessment, your therapist will gather information about your history and what you’re looking to achieve through the Cognitive Processing Therapy.  It is important to note that you are never required to give an account of or provide details surrounding your traumatic event or events, though this is an option if you desire.  Additionally, your therapist will explore past experiences that might impact your response to trauma.
Through this process, you will become a part of developing your treatment plan. Together you will determine the most traumatic event that will be the focus of your sessions, though there may be more than one event that is addressed during the course of treatment.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN your sessions:

Throughout your sessions, you will work with your therapist to examine your beliefs surrounding the triggering events.  These beliefs can sometimes be disordered versions of reality, which often spawn unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviors that negatively impact your functioning. Using discussion, worksheets and other techniques, you will challenge your cognitive process and reassess your beliefs.  Much like with the muscles in the body, flexibility is important in your thoughts; cognitive flexibility increases your strength and mental resilience.
It is important to know that an integral part of the CPT Program is the assignments between sessions.  While these exercises are not excessively time-consuming, we do ask you to dedicate 10 to 20 minutes a day to practice, process and absorb the material covered in the session.
